The Second Census of Economic Activities (CEA - 2)

The National Statistical Office (NSO) hereby informs
government agencies, the business sector, stakeholders, and the general public
that it will undertake the Second Census of Economic Activities (CEA-2) over a
four-month period, from August to November 2026. This significant initiative
will be conducted with technical and financial assistance from the World Bank through
the SADC Regional Statistics Capacity Project.
Under the
Census of Economic Activities, the NSO will conduct the Census of Economic
Establishments, a comprehensive nationwide statistical operation to collect
detailed information on the economic activities of small-, medium-, and
large-scale enterprises across Malawi. This exercise is essential for assessing
businesses' contribution to the national economy and will aid evidence-based
development planning, investment decision-making, and the formulation of
economic policies. The census will be carried out under the motto: “Every
Business Counts – Participate in the Measurement of Malawi’s Economy.”
The census
will encompass a comprehensive array of economic establishments, including
retail outlets, manufacturing companies, service providers, agricultural farms,
and other enterprises. Officials from the NSO will visit these establishments
to gather information on locations, employment, business descriptions, sales,
expenses, production levels, and other relevant economic indicators.
The NSO
requests the full cooperation of all respondents and members of the general
public with its officers during the data collection period. All information
provided will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and used exclusively
for statistical purposes, in compliance with the National Statistics Act, 2013.
